Quinta dos Castelares
Quinta dos Castelares is located in Freixo de Espada à Cinta, in the Douro Superior, surrounded by the Natural Park. In their production methods, they seek to preserve ancestral cultivation techniques combined with the latest developments in viticulture, which lead to greater environmental sustainability and respect for the environment. The low level of mechanisation – where the grapes are harvested by hand into small parcels – and the low yields per hectare are the best examples of this. In the various vineyards that make up the Quinta, they seek to take advantage of the specificities of each location. In the Vinha do Almirante, they have old vines that are over 40 years old, with the main red varieties of the Douro, with special emphasis on Touriga Nacional. Due to their age and altitude, they are able to obtain great elegance in the wines. In the Congida vineyard, on the banks of the Douro, they only plant red varieties, giving body and structure. In Castelares, they take advantage of the greater difference in altitudes and sun exposure. There, they have white varieties planted in the highest and coolest parts, with a north-northeast exposure. This combination results in elegance and complexity.
