Wines from the Setúbal Peninsula

Most of the region's wines are made from the Castelão grape variety - they are structured and fruity when tasted, with aromas of cherry, blackcurrant, acorn, chestnut, candied plum, blackberry and raspberry, which harmonise well with ageing in oak barrels. The region's leading white grape varieties are Arinto, Fernão Pires and Moscatel de Setúbal, which is used in white wines and also in the fortified wines of the Setúbal Designation of Origin. This wine has unique characteristics due to its floral aromas in the whites and the soft flavours of spices and wild berries in the reds. Among the red varieties, Alfrocheiro and Trincadeira stand out.
