For several decades, the Barbeito family struggled to survive in the bulk wine market, where quality was sometimes sacrificed for quantity. This business vision ended with the arrival of Ricardo Diogo Freitas, the current owner, whose desire to return to the roots completely changed the course of this house. In the early 1990s, Freitas began developing his own production with the idea of creating a collection of great, timeless, and immortal wines that would pay homage to his grandfather, the founder of this mythical brand. Thirty years later, Barbeito is present almost all over the world and offers a wide range of oak-aged wines that express the potential of this region through their distinct and appreciated styles. Barbeito classifies its wines into three categories. On one hand, there are the wines produced in selected barrels, which he encompasses under the title Single Cask. The Single Harvest category consists of single-varietal wines from single vintages produced with the island's traditional grapes (Sercial, Verdelho, Boal, Malvasia, and Tinta Negra). Finally, the Frasqueiras, the most valuable jewels of the house with incalculable worth, are already part of the history of these admired Portuguese fortifications.
