Unveiling the Label (Part 2): A Journey Through the Regions of Portugal

Sep 23, 2025

Hello, wine adventurers! Welcome back to the Bons Bagos blog. In our first article, we begin to unravel the secrets that each wine label tells us. We've talked about grape varieties, vintages, and aging, but today we're packing our bags for a sensory journey through Portugal, without ever leaving our glasses. Our destination? The great wine regions that define the character of our wines.

Just as a person is influenced by the land where they are born, a wine is a reflection of its region. The climate, the soil, the tradition... all of that is bottled and reaches us. Understanding a wine's region is like having a map that points us to the types of flavors and aromas we will find. Ready? Let's go!

Douro: The Quiet Strength of the "Old World"

When we think of the Douro Valley, we think of power, of structure, of wines that fill the soul. It's the land of Port wine, of course, but the table wines (the so-called "still" wines) are absolutely spectacular. The schist soils and the extreme climate (very hot in summer, very cold in winter) create wines, both red and white, with fantastic complexity and aging potential.

In the red wines, such as the Quinta Vale d'Aldeia Grande Reserva Sousão 2022 , we often find very concentrated wines, with aromas of ripe red fruits, cocoa and spices, and a structured palate with good acidity and velvety tannins. In the white wines, the Douro shows its fresher and more mineral side. A good example is the Inóspito Viosinho 2023 , a wine that expresses the richness of the granitic terroir where it originates, showing a vibrant freshness and perfect balance.

Alentejo: The Warm Heart of Portugal

Surrounded by mountains that protect it from the winds, the Dão region is the birthplace of some of Portugal's most elegant wines. The granitic soils impart a unique minerality and freshness, and varieties such as Touriga Nacional and Encruzado achieve remarkable complexity here.

In the red wines, the watchword is elegance. The Quinta de Lemos Touriga Nacional 2013 is a perfect example, with notes of red fruit, toast and smoke, in a landscape dominated by floral aromas, and a firm and modern structure on the palate. In the white wines, the queen grape variety is Encruzado. The Quinta de Lemos Dona Paulette 2020 shows us why: it is a wine with minerality, notes of resinous vegetation, eucalyptus and a well-integrated acidity that gives it great aging potential.

If you're looking for elegance and complexity, Dão wines are for you. See our collection here!

Vinho Verde: Atlantic Freshness

Forget the idea that Vinho Verde is just that light, sparkling wine. The region, marked by the influence of the Atlantic, is a treasure trove of freshness and acidity, producing some of the most vibrant white wines in the country. The stars here are the Alvarinho and Loureiro grape varieties.

The Landcraft Alvarinho 2023 , from the Monção and Melgaço sub-region, showcases the more serious side of the grape variety: an aroma of citrus and floral fruits with a touch of dried fruit, with great freshness and minerality on the palate. In turn, the Landcraft Loureiro 2023 is the pure expression of the Loureiro grape: very aromatic, with a delicate texture and pronounced acidity that calls for seafood.

Azores: The Volcanic and Saline Soul

To speak of wines from the Azores is to speak of something truly unique. Planted in fissures of volcanic rock, just meters from the sea, the vines give rise to wines with an unmistakable identity: a sharp minerality and a salinity that transports us directly to the middle of the Atlantic.

The Arinto dos Açores Sur Lies 2023 is bottled proof of this terroir: a pure mineral aroma with notes of grapefruit, and a tense attack on the palate, with acidity and saline notes very present. Even the rosés, such as the Rosé Vulcânico 2024 , share this identity, with an intense nose of ripe strawberry combined with notes of iodine and black pepper, and a textured, saline and fresh palate.

Bairrada: The Rebellion of the Berry and the Excellence of the Bubbles

Bairrada is a region with a strong personality. Its clay-limestone soils and Atlantic climate are the perfect setting for the Baga variety, a red grape with powerful tannins that creates wines with incredible aging potential. It is also one of the best regions in Portugal for sparkling wines!

To truly appreciate the power of Baga, there's nothing like a sparkling wine such as La Volée Rosé Bruto Nature Espumante 2021 , which showcases the variety's fruitiest and most elegant side, revealing freshness and persistent smoothness. Meanwhile, Quinta do Ribeirinha Pé Franco 2019 is the ultimate expression of Baga Tinta: a wine from ungrafted vines, with excellent concentration, crisp acidity, and great complexity that promises to age for many years to come.

For the most adventurous palates, Bairrada awaits you. Explore our Bairrada wines!
