May 1, 2025

Portugal is a country of contrasts and traditions, and this diversity is beautifully reflected in its wine regions. Each area, with its unique terroir, climate and native grape varieties, offers wines with distinct and captivating personalities. On the Bons Bagos blog, we invite you to embark on a journey through some of Portugal’s most famous regions, discovering what makes them special and suggesting emblematic wines from our catalogue to toast this richness.

Douro: The Cradle of Port Wine and Powerful Reds

The oldest demarcated region in the world, the Douro is synonymous with stunning landscapes, with vineyards planted on steep, gravity-defying terraces. World-famous for its Port wine, the Douro also produces exceptionally high-quality red and white table wines (DOC Douro). The reds, often made from the same grape varieties as Port (such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão), are generally robust, complex and have great ageing potential. The whites, from grape varieties such as Rabigato, Viosinho and Gouveio, are increasingly recognised for their freshness, structure and minerality.

  • Bons Bagos Emblematic Suggestion : To feel the soul of the Douro, we recommend Quinta da Leda 2019. An iconic red wine from Casa Ferreirinha, known for its complexity, elegance and intensity, representing the best that the Douro Superior has to offer.

Alentejo: Solar Plains and Generous Wines

The Alentejo, with its vast, rolling plains and hot, dry climate, is Portugal’s largest wine region. It is the realm of generous, full-bodied and fruity red wines, where grape varieties such as Aragonez, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet and Syrah find ideal conditions. The white wines, mainly from Antão Vaz, Arinto and Roupeiro, are equally appreciated for their aromatic exuberance, notes of tropical fruit and good structure. The Alentejo combines tradition, such as amphorae wine, with winemaking innovation.

  • Bons Bagos Emblematic Suggestion : A true icon of the Alentejo is the Mouchão Tonel 3-4 2013. Produced only in exceptional years from the Alicante Bouschet grape variety of selected vineyards, it is a wine of enormous depth, complexity and longevity, representing the maximum exponent of Herdade do Mouchão.

Dão: The Elegance of Altitude

Surrounded by mountains that protect it from the Atlantic and continental influences, the Dão region benefits from high altitudes and granite soils, ideal conditions for the production of elegant and complex wines. It is the birthplace of Touriga Nacional, which here achieves a highly refined expression. Other important red varieties are Alfrocheiro, Jaen and Tinta Roriz. In the whites, Encruzado reigns supreme, producing structured, mineral wines with excellent ageing capacity.

  • Bons Bagos Emblematic Suggestion : To taste the queen of grape varieties in its region of origin, we suggest Quinta de Lemos Touriga Nacional 2013. A wine that demonstrates the floral elegance and firm structure typical of Touriga Nacional from Dão.

Lisbon: Coastal Diversity

Formerly known as Estremadura, the Lisbon Wine Region stretches along the Atlantic coast, north of the capital. It is a vast and diverse region, with several Designations of Origin such as Bucelas, Colares and Alenquer. The maritime influence gives the wines a fresh feel. Here we find Portuguese grape varieties such as Arinto and Fernão Pires, but also international varieties. One interesting fact is the recovery of the white Jampal grape variety, which was almost extinct, which produces unique and aromatic wines.

  • Bons Bagos Emblematic Suggestion : Experience the uniqueness of the Jampal grape variety with the Manz Dona Fátima Jampal Reserva 2020. A white wine from Manzwine, which rescued this grape variety and demonstrates its aromatic potential and complexity when aged in barrels.

Bairrada: Sparkling Wines of Excellence and the Power of Baga

Located in the central coastal region of Portugal, Bairrada is famous for its clay-limestone soils and Atlantic influence. It is home to the Baga grape variety, which produces red wines with an intense colour, firm tannins and great ageing potential, as well as sparkling wines of exceptional quality, both white (often "Blanc de Noirs" made from Baga) and rosé. Among the whites, the Maria Gomes (Fernão Pires) and Bical grape varieties stand out.

Vinhos Verdes: Freshness and Aromatic Lightness

In the northwest of Portugal, the Vinho Verde Demarcated Region is unique in the world. It is characterized by a lush green landscape and a strong Atlantic influence, resulting in wines that are extremely fresh, aromatic and often have a moderate alcohol content. It is the birthplace of Alvarinho (in the Monção and Melgaço sub-region), but also of other notable white grape varieties such as Loureiro, Arinto (Pedernã), Avesso and Trajadura. It also produces interesting red and rosé wines.

  • Bons Bagos Emblematic Suggestion : Discover a unique interpretation of Alvarinho with Pequenos Rebentos Alvarinho "À Moda Antiga" 2020. A wine that explores traditional winemaking methods to highlight the complexity of the variety.

Algarve: The Wine Renaissance in the South

Although best known for its beaches, the Algarve region has seen a renaissance in its winemaking. With a warm, sunny climate, it produces red, white and rosé wines. Traditional grape varieties such as Negra Mole and Crato (Síria) share the land with national and international varieties. Algarve wines are often characterised by being smooth and fruity.

  • Bons Bagos Emblematic Suggestion : Be surprised by the traditional red grape variety of the Algarve in the Arvad Negra Mole Tinto 2023. A wine that showcases the elegance and earthy notes of this unique variety.

Madeira: Fortified Wines and Volcanic Terroir

Madeira Island is world famous for its eponymous fortified wine, Madeira Wine, known for its unique longevity and complexity, resulting from the process of stoving or canning. The noble grape varieties are Sercial (dry), Verdelho (semi-dry), Boal (semi-sweet) and Malvasia (sweet). However, the island also produces increasingly interesting table wines (DOC Madeirense and IG Terras Madeirenses), exploring grape varieties such as Verdelho, Arnsburger and Tinta Negra, often with a marked minerality due to the volcanic soils. The neighbouring island of Porto Santo, with its limestone soils, also offers distinguished white wines.

  • Bons Bagos Emblematic Suggestion : Explore the unique minerality of Porto Santo with the Crosta Calcária 2022 from Companhia dos Profetas e Vilões. An intense and saline white wine made from the Caracol and Listrão grape varieties.

Azores: The Influence of the Volcano and the Atlantic

In the middle of the Atlantic, the Azores archipelago offers a truly unique terroir. The vineyards, often planted in volcanic stone "pens" to protect them from the sea winds, produce wines with a distinctly mineral and saline character. The local white grape varieties such as Arinto dos Açores, Verdelho and Terrantez do Pico are the stars, producing white wines of great freshness and identity. Some interesting reds are also produced.

  • Bons Bagos Emblematic Suggestion : Feel the strength of the Atlantic and the volcano in Arinto dos Açores Sur Lies 2023. A vibrant, tense and saline white that encapsulates the Azorean terroir.

This journey through the regions of Portugal demonstrates the incredible diversity and quality of our wines. We invite you to continue exploring and discover new favorites in the Bons Bagos catalog!
